Thursday Thirteen

For my Thursday Thirteen I thought I would list 13 of my favorite artists (as in painters, not musical!) ;)

1. Vincent Van Gogh: Vincent is definitely near the top of the list of my favorite artists (if not my favorite). I starting liking him back when I was about 12 or 13. There was a movie called Vincent and Me (it was a French movie called Vincent et moi, but the Disney Channel dubbed it into English.) It was about a young painter who encounters the ghost of Vincent Van Gogh.

Me at the MOMA in New York back in 2007, standing by my favorite Van Gogh painting, Starry Night

2. Claude Monet: Another one of my favorite artists. Actually, he and Vincent might be tied for first place on my list!

3. Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Bal au moulin de la Galette

4. Edvard Munch: Even if you don't know him by name, you will probably recognize one of his more famous paintings.

The Scream

5. Paul Cèzanne

Still Life With Apples and Oranges

6.  Georges Seurat:

Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte

7. Norman Rockwell: My dad had a lot magazines and books about Norman Rockwell while I was growing up. These are two of my favorite (for obvious reasons). The Rookie (left) and Bottom of the Sixth (right).

8. Èdouard Manet

Garden Path in Rueil

9. Georgia O'Keeffe: I visited her museum when I went to Santa Fe back in 2003. I really enjoyed her artwork!

Ram's Head White Hollyhock and Little Hills

10. Andy Warhol

Me at the MOMA by Warhol's Campbell Soup Cans

11. Edgar Degas:

The Cotton Exchange at New Orleans

12. J.M.W. Turner: The Dallas Art Museum had a special exhibit of his artwork a few years ago.

Wrecker's Coast of Northumberland

13. Henri Matisse:

Vase of Sunflowers

  2. OMG! You were within shoulder-bumping distance of a Van Gogh? And program flapping distance of a Monet? I am so jealous!

  3. Beautiful paintings! I regret not knowing anything about art or famous artists. I do remember the painting by Georges Seurat in Ferris Bueller's Day Off but I don't think that counts! Haha!

Thanks for sharing these gems with us!

  4. We like a lot of the same painters. I fell in love with Starry Night as a child. I finally got to see it in person when the MOMA exhibit traveled to Houston. It was incredible. I also saw The Scream at an exhibit in Balboa Park, well before it was stolen. I've also seen Degas up close and personal. The reprints do not do them justice.
    Wonderful list.

  6. When our kids were little, we purchased postcards of famous paintings (among them, the artwork in your post today). I purchased doubles of everything so we could play a sort of 'memory game.' Each pair they made they had to read what it was and who painted it. When you actually eventually get to The National Gallery of Art, it's so amazing to SEE those paintings in real life!
    Love this post!

It also surprises me how HUGE some of the paintings actually are and how tiny some actually are. Postcards make them all the same size. :-D

Great choices for your list! I would also add Dali to that list. One of my favorite paintings is Persistence of Memory.

  8. Lovely choices in paintings. You really like Impressionists! I like George Caleb Bingham, but I also like Raphael. I probably couldn't pick a favorite.

  10. Great idea for a Thursday 13! I saw a Picasso/Matisse show in NYC a few years ago and it was really great--showed their influences on each other.
